Booth (1805–1895) was a prominent nineteenth-century businessman, financier, railroad organizer, and philanthropist whose long career helped shape the commercial and institutional life of New York and the expanding United States. He died in Englewood, New Jersey, in December 1895, after more than seven decades of active professional and civic engagement.

Born in Stratford, Connecticut, on November 6, 1805, Booth moved to New York City in 1821 as a young man and soon entered the international trade business. He established himself as a tea importer through the firm Tomlinson & Booth, later known as Tomlinson, Booth & Edgar. From 1838 to 1878, he was deeply involved in sugar refining as a partner in the firm Booth & Edgar, building a reputation as a steady and capable industrial leader.

Booth played an important role in the expansion of American railroads during the mid-nineteenth century. Working alongside figures such as William B. Ogden and Samuel J. Tilden, he helped organize the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company. He also served as a trustee of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad and as a director of the Cincinnati, Lafayette and Indianapolis Railroad, placing him at the center of the nation’s rapidly growing transportation network.

His influence extended into banking and public finance. From 1857 to 1860, Booth served as president of the American Exchange Bank, and in 1878 he was elected president of the Third National Bank. He retired from banking and business in 1892, at the age of eighty-seven. Earlier, in 1870, he chaired the committee appointed to investigate the notorious Tweed Ring frauds, contributing to efforts to expose municipal corruption in New York City.

Booth was also widely known for his philanthropic and religious work. From 1861 to 1889, he served as president of the Children’s Aid Society, and for decades he was a trustee of the New York Life Insurance Company. His charitable commitments were international in scope: he held leadership or trustee roles with institutions such as the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut, Robert College in Constantinople, the American Seamen’s Friend Society, the American Tract Society of Boston, the American and Foreign Christian Union, and the Bible House of Constantinople. He also served as vice president of the Seamen’s Bank for Savings.

In his later years, Booth resided in Englewood, New Jersey, where he spent the final chapter of his life. Contemporary accounts noted both his financial acumen and his moral influence, emphasizing his dedication to benevolent causes and his belief that wealth carried public responsibility. At his death, he was remembered as a figure who combined business success with sustained commitments to reform, charity, and global humanitarian work.

"William Angus Booth Dead." The Boston Globe, 29 Dec. 1895, p. 2.
</text>
