Founded in 1884, the Exchange operated on a practical but deeply social mission: to provide respectable income-earning opportunities for women facing financial hardship while also meeting community needs.

The Exchange worked through a system of “consignors”—primarily women—who produced goods such as sewn garments, baked items, and handmade household products that were sold through the organization. Rather than offering direct charity, this model allowed women to earn income from their own labor, preserving dignity and independence. From its inception, the Exchange emphasized returning the largest possible share of proceeds to the consignors after operating expenses were covered.

During periods of economic instability, the organization became especially vital. It provided temporary and emergency income to families whose primary earners were unable to work or whose household earnings had declined. Over time, hundreds of women were listed on its rolls, and substantial sums were distributed annually to support struggling households in Englewood and nearby communities.

Financially, the Exchange sustained itself through room rentals in Exchange Hall, annual subscriptions from sustaining members, and community-sponsored entertainments. Continued public support was consistently framed as essential to maintaining its work.

Beyond its economic function, the Exchange served as a civic women’s network. Its officers and managers—drawn from Englewood’s community leadership—continued a tradition of organized female philanthropy that stretched back to the late nineteenth century. For decades, the Englewood Woman’s Work Exchange stood as a structured, community-supported lifeline that blended philanthropy, women’s labor, and civic responsibility.
