Ward was one of the founders of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and became the first United States Navy officer killed during the American Civil War, mortally wounded in June 1861 while commanding the Potomac Flotilla at the Battle of Mathias Point. His death was widely memorialized, and his name carried lasting prestige within military and public circles.

Raised in the shadow of this legacy, Charles Ward entered public life through the clergy rather than the military. By the mid-1880s, he was living in Englewood and had assumed leadership of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. According to the New York Times, residents described him as intelligent, energetic, and outwardly successful. Parishioners credited him with revitalizing a struggling congregation—improving attendance, stabilizing church finances, and restoring the church’s standing in the community. Englewood residents later told reporters that Ward appeared disciplined, devoted to his work, and fully engaged in parish life, and that his efforts were widely seen as having “turned the church around.”

Ward’s private life, however, was marked by instability. He was married four times; his fourth wife was Orpah Van Schaick. He had two children, Charles and Bessie. In February 1887, the contrast between his public reputation and private crisis became violently visible. According to contemporary reporting, Ward suddenly attacked his family inside their home, firing multiple shots from a revolver. His wife was shot and seriously injured but survived. One of his children was also shot and badly wounded. Ward then attempted to kill himself, inflicting a gunshot wound that was not immediately fatal.

The New York Times emphasized the shock expressed by neighbors and parishioners, many of whom insisted that nothing in Ward’s recent conduct suggested violence or instability. Friends and congregants portrayed the episode as a complete rupture from his known character, repeatedly describing the attack as occurring “in a moment of insanity.” Coverage highlighted the disbelief that a man viewed as sober, competent, and morally upright—especially one bearing the name of a celebrated national figure—could commit such an act.

Following the shooting, Ward was placed under medical supervision rather than immediately prosecuted, reflecting nineteenth-century views that severe mental disturbance mitigated criminal responsibility. His condition reportedly worsened over the following weeks. In May 1887, he died after ingesting a fatal dose of chlorate, an act reported as suicide. His death brought a tragic end to a life shaped by inherited public distinction, local respect, and profound private unraveling—an episode that contemporaries understood as both a personal catastrophe and a warning about mental illness hidden beneath outward success.
