<elementText elementTextId="2873">
                <text>
Irwin William Langston “Dominie” Roundtree was born into slavery in Georgia sometime in the mid-1850s, though the precise year of his birth remains uncertain. Census records, seminary files, and Roundtree’s own recollections offer conflicting dates, ranging from 1855 to 1860. What is clear is that he experienced slavery firsthand and was old enough to remember emancipation. He later recalled the moment of freedom as one marked by prayer, hand-shaking, and the singing of plantation songs—an event that shaped his lifelong commitment to education, religion, and racial uplift.

Denied formal schooling while enslaved, Roundtree began his education only after emancipation, attending brief country schools taught by Black Union veterans and learning to read and write through church-based instruction. His father, a preacher, insisted that education and faith go hand in hand, even when long distances and economic hardship made schooling difficult. As a young man, Roundtree was forced to leave school repeatedly to work on farms, in sawmills, and on railroads across the post-war South, saving money whenever possible to continue his studies.

Roundtree’s determination carried him through an extraordinary educational journey. He studied at the Cookman Institute in Florida, the Home Missionary Baptist School in Live Oak, Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, supporting himself as a laborer, teacher, hotel waiter, and bootblack. After teaching and pastoring in Virginia, he entered Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey, and later studied at Princeton Theological Seminary. While at Princeton, he also enrolled in graduate study at the College of New Jersey, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1895 after completing advanced coursework in philosophy under Professor Alexander T. Ormond.

By the late nineteenth century, Roundtree had become a respected minister, educator, and public intellectual in New Jersey. He served for twenty-five years as pastor of Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Trenton, during which time he also studied law and pursued admission to the New Jersey Bar. His belief in education as the foundation of Black advancement led him to advocate strongly for school reform and industrial education, aligning in many respects with the philosophy of Booker T. Washington.

Roundtree’s influence extended beyond Trenton to Englewood, New Jersey, where he served as pastor of an African Methodist Episcopal congregation that worshipped at Dwight Chapel, a facility managed by the local Presbyterian church. In the early 1890s, his ministry there became the center of a public controversy. Newspaper accounts reported that Roundtree was barred from using Dwight Chapel following a dispute with the Presbyterian authorities who controlled the building. The incident exposed racial and denominational tensions in Englewood and underscored the precarious position of Black congregations that depended on white-controlled religious spaces. The episode brought public attention to Roundtree as both a religious leader and a figure willing to challenge institutional inequality.

In addition to his religious work, Roundtree was deeply involved in Republican politics in New Jersey, advocating for civil rights, racial equality, and anti-lynching legislation at a time when such positions required political courage. Even late in life, his pursuit of learning did not slow. In 1929, he traveled to England to study at the University of Oxford, an achievement widely celebrated in the Black press as the culmination of a sixty-year quest for education that had begun in slavery.

Irwin W. L. Roundtree died in 1948, leaving behind a legacy that bridged slavery and the modern civil rights struggle. His life reflected a relentless commitment to education, faith, and public service—and in places like Englewood, his story also reveals the local struggles over race, power, and access that shaped northern Black life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

"The News In Brief." The Courier-News, 23 Mar. 1891, p.3.

"Final Vote In Bergen." The Record, 21 May 1936, p.2.

"Conclusion of the Conference of the A.M.E. Church." The Courier-News, 8 May 1890, p. 1.

"Son of Slaves Finishing Oxford Course." Trenton Sunday Times Advertiser, March 8, 1931.
</text>
