<text>
Edith Rutledge Dulles Snare (March 30, 1897 – April 1985) was a civic leader, entrepreneur, and cultural advocate whose life bridged prominent family lineage and sustained community service across New Jersey and Vermont.

Born in Englewood, New Jersey, Edith was the daughter of William Dulles and Sophia (Rhey) Dulles and a member of the extended Dulles family, which included her cousins John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles. She grew up in a milieu shaped by public service, business, and social responsibility—values that would inform her own life’s work.

In 1916, her engagement and subsequent marriage to Frederick Snare Jr., an engineer associated with the firm Snare & Triest, was widely noted in New York society columns. After her divorce from Frederick, Edith moved to Vermont and became deeply involved in civic and cultural affairs, particularly in the town of Dorset, which would remain her home for more than four decades.

Edith distinguished herself through hands-on community leadership rather than ceremonial involvement. She was a founder of the Dorset Nursing Association, helping establish vital local health services at a time when rural medical infrastructure was limited. Her commitment to the arts was equally significant: she served as an early executive director of the Southern Vermont Artists Association in Manchester, supporting regional artists and strengthening the cultural life of the area.

In the 1950s, Edith entered the business world by establishing Snare Real Estate Associates, demonstrating an entrepreneurial independence that was still uncommon for women of her generation. Through this work, she played a role in shaping local development while maintaining strong ties to community priorities.

She and Frederick Snare Jr. raised four children: Frederick Snare III, William Dulles Snare, Dorothy Warner, and Marjorie Reed. Family life remained central to her identity, alongside her public commitments.

Edith Dulles Snare died at her home in Dorset at the age of 88. By the time of her passing, she was remembered not only for her distinguished family connections, but for a life marked by practical leadership, civic engagement, and lasting contributions to healthcare, the arts, and local enterprise in southern Vermont.

Edith moved to Vermont after her divorce from Frederick Snare Jr.
