Alva Jackson was a widely respected civic leader and community organizer in Englewood, best known for her decades of service to the city’s Fourth Ward and her tireless advocacy for working-class families, children, and seniors. Active during the mid-20th century, Jackson played a crucial role in connecting residents to food, clothing, youth programs, and social services during and after the Great Depression, when many families struggled to survive.

Often described as knowing “every name and face” in her neighborhood, Jackson worked door to door organizing residents, not for political gain but to ensure that people had a voice in local government and access to basic necessities. Her work bridged generations, and even as her physical presence in the neighborhood lessened with age, she continued to provide guidance and counseling to the children and grandchildren of those she once assisted.

Jackson collaborated with organizations such as the Bergen County Community Action Program and the Neighborhood Center in Englewood, helping to advance youth initiatives and summer programs. Her influence extended across civic life, earning her recognition from city officials, county leaders, and longtime residents alike.

In 1973, Englewood formally honored her as the city’s Outstanding Citizen, celebrating her lifetime of service at a testimonial dinner attended by more than 200 people. The Bergen Record described her as Englewood's "top citizen." Friends, neighbors, and public officials praised her compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to community well-being. For many in Englewood, Alva Jackson came to symbolize the highest ideals of citizenship: service, solidarity, and care for others without expectation of reward.
