Siegal, Martin
Description
Martin Siegal was a mid-20th-century industrial executive and president of the Marvel Lamp Company Inc. of Fort Lee, New Jersey, a firm known for producing long-life electric light bulbs. A resident of Englewood Cliffs, Siegal represented the second generation of leadership in a family business founded in 1932 by his father, Adam Siegal, an early pioneer in electric lighting who had previously worked for the original Thomas Edison Lamp Works beginning in 1906. By the mid-1960s, Martin Siegal had led the company for approximately fifteen years, guiding its growth in a competitive industry dominated by large national manufacturers. Under his leadership, Marvel Lamp Company specialized in producing durable, long-life bulbs designed to last significantly longer than conventional lamps, helping the company carve out a niche market based on quality and reliability. During Siegal’s tenure, Marvel Lamp Company gained recognition within the lighting industry and celebrated more than three decades of continuous operation, an achievement acknowledged by Corning Glass Works, a major supplier to the lamp industry. The company introduced several notable innovations over the years, including a medium-base three-way bulb in 1936, a double-life bulb with dual filaments in 1939, and weather-resistant outdoor lighting products designed to withstand sudden environmental changes. Some of Marvel’s bulbs were designed to last from two to as many as ten years, and they were distributed widely through discount and variety stores, making long-lasting lighting accessible to everyday consumers. In addition to managing company operations, Siegal also served as a public representative of the business, participating in promotional efforts such as radio broadcasts that highlighted the benefits of long-life lighting technology. Martin Siegal’s career reflects the importance of family-run manufacturing firms in northern New Jersey during the mid-twentieth century. His leadership illustrates how smaller regional companies could remain competitive by focusing on specialized products and technical innovation rather than mass production. As president and chief executive officer, working alongside his brother Arthur Siegal, who oversaw manufacturing operations including a southern plant, Martin Siegal helped sustain Marvel Lamp Company’s reputation in a rapidly changing industrial landscape. His role as both a business leader and public promoter of durable lighting products places him among the many regional executives who contributed to the economic and industrial development of Bergen County and the surrounding communities during the postwar era.
