Barbara “Bobbie” Goldberg, born in 1939 in Allegan, Michigan, lived a life marked by curiosity, dedication, and service to her community. As a young student, she demonstrated strong academic ability and an enthusiasm for learning. She also developed an early interest in sports, particularly baseball, where she enjoyed keeping statistics for her school team.
After graduating from Allegan High School in 1957, she attended Western Michigan College, where she studied social work. During her college years, she met Jim Bouton, an energetic baseball pitcher who later joined the New York Yankees organization. The two married in 1962, and as Jim’s professional career developed, their family life included frequent moves across the country. Together they raised three children—Michael, David, and Laurie—while navigating the challenges and adventures that came with life in professional sports. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1981.
Barbara possessed a strong knowledge of sports and a natural ability to communicate about them. Her interest in athletics eventually contributed to writing projects connected to baseball, including collaboration on sports-related works. Later in life, she met Philip Goldberg, a college physics professor, whom she described as the love of her life. They married in 1986 and shared many years of travel and cultural exploration. During Philip’s academic sabbaticals, the couple spent extended time in places such as China and New Mexico, immersing themselves in local communities and enjoying outdoor activities like hiking.
Beyond her personal and family life, Barbara became deeply involved in volunteer work and historical preservation. She devoted many years to supporting local libraries in Englewood and Closter, particularly through book sales and community programming. Her interest in history led her to participate actively in local historical societies, where she contributed to projects that preserved and shared the region’s heritage. She also co-authored a historical publication connected to the Englewood Library, reflecting her passion for documenting local stories.
Her dedication to community service extended into civic engagement. Barbara served on local preservation and environmental commissions and supported organizations dedicated to protecting historic sites and open spaces. Her volunteer work earned recognition from local officials, who honored her for her many years of service and commitment to preserving community history.
Known for her warmth, kindness, and welcoming personality, Barbara built friendships easily and maintained a lifelong love of reading, humor, and learning. She enjoyed cultural events, volunteer activities, and time spent with family and friends. Her enthusiasm for community involvement left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside her.
Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter Laurie and several close family members. She is survived by her husband Philip, her sons Michael and David, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends who remember her generosity and dedication.
