Title

Simone, Raina

Description

Raina Simone is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer whose work bridges classic hip hop traditions with a contemporary Generation Z voice. Raised between Englewood and New York City, Raina grew up immersed in hip hop history, music theory, and lyrical craftsmanship, shaped by parents who were avid 1980s rap listeners and by Southern blues influences passed down through her maternal grandfather. Early inspirations range from Tupac, Jay-Z, and Big Pun to jazz and soul icons, with Public Enemy playing a formative role in her understanding of hip hop as both art and social commentary.

Raina first gained widespread attention in 2021 when a freestyle titled “Sometimes I Rap,” filmed by Howard University classmates, went viral on TikTok, amassing millions of views and quickly building a large following. Originally identifying primarily as a producer, she soon began releasing music as a rapper and vocalist, debuting with the 2022 EP To My Hearts, a reflective response to the commercialization of drill music and its impact on Black inner-city life.

Since then, Raina Simone has appeared on major platforms and records, including a 2023 feature on “Minority Report” by Ransom and Nicholas Craven featuring Talib Kweli, and performances on outlets such as Sway’s Universe and Hot 97. In October 2024, she released her debut album Old Soul New Conscience, a storytelling-driven project rooted in family history, identity, and cultural preservation, widely praised as a modern hip hop classic. With millions of streams, national radio airplay, and recognition as BET Amplified Artist of the Month in April 2025, Raina Simone continues to build a career grounded in longevity, narrative power, and the preservation of hip hop’s core values.
