Item

Title

Jeffries, Leonard

Description

Leonard Jeffries is an American historian and professor emeritus best known for his long tenure at City College of New York (CUNY), where he chaired the Black Studies department. Trained as a historian of Africa and the African diaspora, Jeffries emphasized Africana-centered interpretations of world history and was influential in shaping Black Studies programs during the late 20th century. He became a national figure in the early 1990s after controversial public remarks sparked intense debate over academic freedom, antisemitism, and the boundaries of scholarly discourse. Despite the controversy, Jeffries remained a prominent voice in Afrocentric scholarship and Black nationalist intellectual circles.

Jeffries was a long time resident of Teaneck, NJ.
