Description

Colonel Harriot Van Devanter Moore (January 29, 1879 – March 31, 1939) was a distinguished military officer, civic leader, and former mayor of Englewood, New Jersey. Born in New York City to Homer Ramsdell Moore and Harriet Van Devanter Moore, he was a descendant of the Rev. John Moore, an early Englewood clergyman. Moore was educated at the Lyons School in New York, the Black Hall School in Connecticut, and Amherst College, graduating in 1901, after which he entered the brokerage firm D. T. Moore & Co. and became a member of the New York Stock Exchange in 1904. Moore combined a prominent business career with extensive military service. He served with the New Jersey National Guard and the U.S. Army, including duty on the Mexican border and overseas in World War I. Rising through the ranks, he became an acting brigadier general commanding the 155th Infantry Brigade of the 78th Division and later commanded the 310th Infantry. He was decorated by France for his service at Verdun and by the State of New Jersey for his border service. In Englewood, Moore was widely respected as both a soldier and a public servant. He served as mayor, was councilman-at-large, and was deeply involved in civic and veterans’ organizations, including the Army and Navy Club, the American Legion, and the VFW. His leadership was so influential that local military bands were dedicated in his honor, and plans were made for monuments and memorials bearing his name. Moore died at age 58 following an appendicitis operation and was accorded full military honors at his funeral, underscoring his lasting impact on Englewood’s civic and military life.
