Title
Kamaal Ibn John Fareed "Q Tip"
Description
Q-Tip’s career has roots that stretch into Englewood as part of the broader history of New Jersey’s role in hip-hop. Though he is most closely associated with Queens, New York, Q-Tip lived for a time in Englewood, New Jersey, joining a tradition of artists and cultural figures who crossed the Hudson for the city’s creative energy and proximity to New York. Englewood became both a retreat and a workspace, and Q-Tip’s presence there reflected the city’s place in the hip-hop corridor that links Harlem, the Bronx, Queens, and northern New Jersey. His residency tied him to Englewood’s long lineage of musical innovators—stretching from jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie to contemporary hip-hop artists—showing how the city has served as a bridge between local community life and the global cultural stage. In this way, Q-Tip’s Englewood connection underscores the city’s quiet but vital role in shaping American music. In February 1998, there was a fire at Q-Tips condo in Englewood which destroyed much of his record collection.
