Title

Townsend, David

Description

David Townsend was a founding member of the R&B band Surface, best known for their string of late-1980s and early-1990s hits like “Shower Me with Your Love” and “The First Time.” A talented musician, singer, and songwriter, Townsend contributed not only his smooth vocals but also his skills on guitar and keyboards, helping shape the group’s lush, romantic sound. The son of songwriter and producer Ed Townsend (who co-wrote Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”), David grew up surrounded by music, which influenced his artistry and professionalism. Alongside Bernard Jackson and David “Pic” Conley, he helped Surface achieve mainstream success, creating timeless love songs that remain staples of quiet storm and R&B playlists. Townsend’s work reflected a commitment to melody, harmony, and emotional depth, securing his place as a key figure in late-20th-century R&B. Townsend also played with the Isley Brothers.
