Stewart, Chuck
Description
Chuck Stewart (1927–2017) was an American photographer renowned for his powerful images of the jazz world and African American life. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he became one of the most important visual chroniclers of modern jazz, capturing iconic portraits and candid shots of artists such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Count Basie, and Ella Fitzgerald. Stewart’s photographs were widely published on album covers, in magazines, and in exhibitions, distinguished by their warmth, intimacy, and ability to convey both the artistry and humanity of his subjects. Beyond jazz, his lens also documented key moments of the Civil Rights era and broader cultural shifts, making his work an invaluable historical record. Stewart lived in Teaneck on Voorhees Street on the border of Englewood in a neighborhood filled with legends like the Isley Brothers and Ulysses Kay. The neighborhood was also a center of civil rights organizing in the 1960s.
