Title
Englewood Hospital Nurses Vote 2-1 to Establish a Union September 26, 1974
Description
Nurses at the Englewood Hospital organized the Englewood nurses association in 1973, the year they won their first contract. In an NLRB election in September 26, 1974, the nurses voted 2-1 to establish a union at the hospital. Under the leadership of Ann Twomey, the Englewood Local 5004 became the first local in what became the Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE). In 1976, the Englewood nurses became the first nurses to strike in New Jersey. The Englewood nurses helped nurses at Pascack Valley Hospital, Jersey Shore Medical Center and Palisades Medical Center organize their own unions.
