Item

Title

Gross, Harry

Description

Harry Gross was a notorious New York City bookmaker and organized crime figure active in the 1940s and early 1950s. He ran one of the largest illegal gambling operations in the city, specializing in sports betting and policy (numbers gambling). Gross’s operation was protected for years by widespread police corruption, which allowed his business to flourish with little interference. When police pressure increased Gross would transfer the headquarters of his operation to Englewood and Cliffside Park. In 1951, Gross was arrested and later became a key witness, exposing an extensive network of bribery involving dozens of New York City police officers and public officials. His testimony led to major corruption scandals, numerous convictions, and sweeping reforms within the NYPD.
