William H. Stemper was a long-serving and respected member of the Englewood Fire Department, dedicating 26 years of his life to public service and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Appointed to the department on October 15, 1932, he earned a reputation as an excellent and dependable fireman and officer, and was promoted to lieutenant on August 10, 1948. Throughout his career, Stemper was known for his professionalism and commitment to protecting the Englewood community. Lieutenant Stemper died on Friday night in 1958 after suffering a heart attack and smoke poisoning while responding to a minor fire at 70 William Street in Englewood, caused by a defective chimney. According to fire officials, heavy smoke filled the home when the department arrived, and Stemper complained of chest discomfort before stepping outside for air. He collapsed shortly afterward and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Englewood Hospital. He resided at 107 Jane Street and was survived by his wife Louise and two daughters, Elizabeth and Terry. His funeral services were held at the Greenleaf Funeral Home, with fellow firefighters serving as pallbearers, and he was laid to rest at Brookside Cemetery. Stemper was also a member of the Firemen’s Mutual Benefit Association, reflecting his deep ties to both his profession and community.
