Description

KRS-One (born Lawrence Parker on August 20, 1965) is one of hip-hop’s most influential MCs, educators, and cultural theorists, best known as the philosophical force behind the pioneering group Boogie Down Productions. Rising to prominence in the mid-1980s, KRS-One helped redefine hip-hop as a platform for social critique, historical consciousness, and self-education through landmark albums such as Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary. Often called “The Teacha,” he has spent decades using music, lectures, and writing to address racism, policing, capitalism, and Black history, while also founding the Temple of Hip Hop to preserve hip-hop as a global culture rooted in knowledge and responsibility. KRS-One has meaningful ties to Englewood, New Jersey, where he lived and was actively involved in local community life beyond his recording career. As a parent in the Englewood school system, he regularly participated in educational and civic activities, including volunteering at Cleveland School, where he gave a dramatic reading during a PTO-sponsored READ IN and Book Fair that exceeded its fundraising goals and helped supply classroom libraries with new books. In 2001 he volunteered with Cleveland School’s ENCORE Program and took part in events such as Hip-Hop Appreciation Week, using his visibility and voice to promote literacy, education, and cultural pride among Englewood’s children. His presence in Englewood reflects the borough’s role as a site of Black cultural, intellectual, and artistic life in North Jersey, and underscores how KRS-One’s commitment to hip-hop has always extended beyond the stage into schools, neighborhoods, and everyday community institutions.
