Title
Johnson, Nathan "Red"
Description
Nathan “Red” Johnson was a prominent Harlem numbers (illegal lottery) operator who became a high-profile figure due to his federal conviction for tax evasion. In the mid-1970s, he failed to report about $100,000 in income from his numbers operation, evading more than $50,000 in taxes. After a jury trial in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, he was sentenced to 27 months in prison. Evidence at trial portrayed him as living a flamboyant lifestyle, including owning a valuable home in Englewood, New Jersey. His conviction followed a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Internal Revenue Service. Nathan “Red” Johnson was killed on June 25, 1985 during a home-invasion robbery at his residence at 336 North Woodland Avenue in Englewood, New Jersey. Intruders forced their way into the house late at night, demanded the location of a safe, and shot Johnson three times in the head, killing him. His wife escaped to a neighbor’s home, and the suspects fled the scene in a minivan. The attack was believed to be motivated by the belief that Johnson kept large sums of cash in his home.
