Title
Woolworths Pickets, Saturday February 20, 1960
Description
About 25–30 high school students from Englewood and Teaneck organized a peaceful demonstration in front of a Woolworth store in Englewood, New Jersey, to support Black students in North Carolina who were being denied service at segregated lunch counters. The students in North Carolina who sat-in on February 1, 1960 began a wave of sit-ins against segregation around the country. The protesters, members of the Bergen County NAACP Youth Council, marched with placards for a set period, calling attention to discriminatory practices by Woolworth and Kress stores across the South. Local NAACP leaders stressed that segregation was not required by law in North Carolina, highlighting that these policies were choices made by businesses. The demonstration was officially approved by local authorities, with police notified to maintain order. Store management declined to comment, and the action aligned with a broader national effort by the NAACP to mobilize youth and college groups in solidarity with the southern sit-in movement.
