Description

Eddie Murphy (born 1961) is one of the most successful comedians and actors in American entertainment history. Rising to national prominence as a cast member on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s, Murphy became a major box-office star through films such as 48 Hrs., Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and Shrek. Known for his sharp comedic timing, memorable character portrayals, and influence on generations of performers, Murphy helped redefine stand-up comedy and popular film comedy during the late twentieth century.

Although Murphy grew up in New York, he maintained significant ties to Englewood for nearly two decades. In 1985, at the height of his rising fame, he purchased a large estate in Englewood's prestigious East Hill neighborhood, replacing an earlier home in nearby Alpine. The property, later known as "Bubble Hill," became one of the most recognizable celebrity residences in Bergen County. Murphy lived there for approximately eighteen years, making Englewood his home base during some of the most successful years of his career.

During his years in Englewood, Murphy raised his family in the community and remained closely connected to local institutions. His son Miles Mitchell Murphy was born at Englewood Hospital in 1992, reflecting the family's roots in the city. Newspaper coverage throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s regularly identified Murphy with Englewood, often describing him as one of the city's most prominent residents.

Murphy's presence also contributed to Englewood's growing reputation as a home for artists, entertainers, and cultural figures. His East Hill estate became a symbol of the community's appeal to successful performers seeking privacy while remaining close to New York City's entertainment industry. Even after eventually selling the property, Murphy remained one of the most famous celebrities associated with Englewood.

Today, Eddie Murphy is remembered not only as an award-winning comedian and actor but also as a longtime Englewood resident whose years in the city coincided with the peak of his rise as a global entertainment icon.
