Title

John F. Kennedy Campaign Stop, November 6, 1960

Description

A large campaign rally for Senator John F. Kennedy during the 1960 presidential race took place at the Teaneck Armory in Bergen County, New Jersey, drawing a crowd of roughly 9,000 people who gathered to hear the Democratic candidate speak. While the audience waited for Kennedy to arrive, an extensive entertainment program featuring well-known performers and supporters kept the crowd engaged. Among those appearing were Tony Bennett, Cab Calloway, Theodore Bikel, Tallulah Bankhead, Anthony Quinn, Peter Lawford, and several other entertainers who sang, delivered brief remarks, or expressed support for Kennedy’s candidacy. Local performers also took part in the program, and emcees used humor and commentary to maintain the crowd’s energy as anticipation built for Kennedy’s arrival. The rally was part of a busy campaign swing through New Jersey, a state Kennedy described as crucial because of its electoral votes. Earlier appearances in Newark and Jersey City had drawn massive crowds, with thousands gathering along streets and in public squares to see him. By the time Kennedy reached the Teaneck Armory, the audience had been waiting for hours but remained enthusiastic and eager. When he finally addressed the crowd, he emphasized key campaign themes, including civil rights, improved medical care for the elderly, and raising the federal minimum wage. The event illustrated the excitement surrounding his campaign and the role that large rallies, celebrity supporters, and energetic public appearances played in building momentum during the final stretch of the 1960 election.

The Record (Hackensack, NJ). “Huge Crowd Entertained Before Kennedy Arrives.” November 7, 1960.
