Title

Sun Ra Arkestra

Description

The Sun Ra Arkestra is one of the most influential and unconventional ensembles in jazz history. Founded in Chicago in the 1950s by Sun Ra, the group blended big-band swing, free jazz, experimental improvisation, electronic instruments, theatrical costumes, and Afrofuturist philosophy. Sun Ra envisioned music as a vehicle for spiritual exploration and social transformation, and the Arkestra became known for its cosmic imagery, elaborate stage performances, and boundary-pushing sound. After Sun Ra's death in 1993, the ensemble continued performing under the leadership of Marshall Allen, preserving and expanding its unique musical legacy.

Englewood had an unexpected connection to the Arkestra through two local musicians who performed with the ensemble at different points in its history.

Earl C. “Buster” Smith (1932–2003) was an Englewood resident and professional drummer whose career included performances with the Sun Ra Arkestra, the Boo Pleasant Band, and the Shirley Scott Trio. According to his obituary, Smith was a member of the Arkestra and also belonged to Musicians Union Local 802. A veteran of the Korean War, he spent decades performing professionally and was remembered as one of Englewood’s accomplished jazz musicians. His involvement with the Arkestra linked him to one of the most innovative movements in modern jazz.

Another musician with Englewood ties was drummer Buster Smith, who performed with tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp from 1982 to 1987 before joining the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1987. Within the ensemble, his powerful rhythmic style and openness to experimentation fit naturally with Sun Ra’s visionary approach to music. His years with the Arkestra helped establish his reputation within avant-garde jazz circles, and he later became an influential teacher and mentor to younger generations of drummers.

Together, these musicians demonstrate how Englewood's cultural influence extended into the world of avant-garde jazz. Through their participation in the Sun Ra Arkestra, they helped connect the city to one of the most creative and enduring ensembles in American musical history.
