Kaplan, Sol (1908-2001)

Description

Sol Kaplan was a business owner and founder of Sol & Sol kosher deli on Palisade Avenue. He opened the deli in 1951 with his partner Sol Stein. Celebrities such as Dizzy Gillespie and Alan Alda discussed the deli on an episode of M*A*S*H. He fled his home village of Kopatkewich in 1921 during the pogroms. He moved to Englewood in the late 1940s. He was a member of the Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Temple Emanu-El. He sold Sol & Sol in 1971. Eventually, he worked as a doorman for an office building in New York City. He married twice, first to Ruth. After her death, he married Frances Silverman in 1974. He had three children, Barry, Francine Rosenberg, and Helene Rubin.
