MacDonald, Hilda
Description
Englewood resident, Hilda MacDonald, was a member of the Six Triple Eight Women's Army Corp Battalion.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, often called the “Six Triple Eight,” was the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II. Deployed to Europe in 1945, the battalion was tasked with clearing massive backlogs of undelivered mail for U.S. troops, working under harsh conditions and tight deadlines. In just a few months, they processed millions of pieces of mail in England and France, boosting troop morale and proving their exceptional efficiency and professionalism despite facing racism and sexism.
