Phelps Estate

Item

Title

Phelps Estate
The Grange

Description

The Phelps Estate was the home of William Walter Phelps. It started as a small farmhouse, the Garrit Brinkerhoff place, owned by Jacob Finck on April 9th, 1865. The house acted as a summer home for the family. Phelps moved to Englewood/Teaneck permanently after the death of his father John Jay Phelps in 1869. His father left behind a large estate which the younger Phelps took care of. Over time the property was expanded to 2,900 acres from Hackensack to the Hudson River. The mansion burned down on April 1, 1888, and Phelps eventually bought the Griggs home and more land to replace it.
